ViCadis Campus

ViCaDiS is now an interoperable environment (www.vicadis.net/campus) which provides a common access and a one-stop place for all the students and professors. It features adaptable and social software which are made freely available for all the users. ViCaDiS is an open education resource and tool used openly and freely at European Level by all the partners and open for use by other universities at the end of the project. The students are able to access ViCaDiS free-of-charge just by proof of their student status.

ViCaDiS is in essence a ‘ community', a virtual campus that contains a blend of Internet and mobile technologies to enhance the student-tutor communication, the quick response of the environment to the student needs (by setting up his own settings and accessing information using this system, transfer learning objects to the mobile) and the environment's flexibility (by using learning objects beside the traditional text, images and animations: blogs, podcasting, wikis). It is based on dual-device architecture: Internet and mobile phone, and features two interfaces: one for the online access (in conformity with the W3C and WCAG regulations for accessibility) and one for the mobile phone.

The ViCaDiS Campus is based around four aspects of development:

  • Technical: the development of the virtual campus ViCaDiS, as an OER with an interoperable interface, social software implementation and new tools for mobile learning.
  • Pedagogy: to encourage informal learning as a viable method for HE, to change Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) into Personal Learning Environments (PLE). This is a challenging aspect as implies a mentality change for teachers and will have a strong impact on how students learn, will change the university learning concept from a mechanistic, content-driven, exam-oriented to one of self-motivations, student ownership, purposeful creativity and peer-to-peer learning. It will transfer the power from teachers to the students and the teacher role will be more of a supervisor and adviser - a senior peer. As we use tools which belong to informal learning or communication we paid more attention to improving the abilities of learners to use such tools critically, reflectively and effectively.
  • Management: to bring about a change in the management of VLE with more distribution of responsibility both at a conceptual level (teachers and students as equal participants) and a practical one, allowing joint participation from different institutions in an open, free educational environment.
  • Social and cultural: ViCaDiS is an online community space, a meeting room where all users (students and teachers) are equal and contribute freely and actively. It uses all partner languages (EN, IT, LT, HU, RO, FI) and brings ‘the outside world'of social media into the ‘education world' and extends the real world of the student campus into virtual space.
