Approach

As the university partners in the project are using different eLearning environments for the distance education or blended learning which is either open source (Moodle), large LMS software (Blackboard) to be able to provide the previously desired tools to their students they need to be able to create an interoperable environment which will bring all of them in one single place. Some of them are using social software to improve the education level of students and to create an integrated online ‘community'. The project main target is to build a virtual campus which will encompass the partners' experience on using or developing these eLearning environments and will provide a unique set of OER desired by the digital students. The OER will be mainly concentrating on tools which will allow a user-content driven environment where students will change from being simple users into content providers. The content will be subject and interest based and will be mainly in conjunction with their curricula but will supplement rather than replace the normal curricula.

Scope
The main scope of ViCaDiS is to provide an accessible and attractive environment for all students within the Member States, using already existing tools which are enhanced with new tools wanted by the new generation of students. By providing students the tools which they use anyway extensively outside the institutional framework of learning (wiki, blogs, forums, IM, podcasting, RSS) ViCaDiS supports the learning attractiveness of the university curricula, improves the quality of the learning process by encouraging the exchange of information/knowledge between students from different universities, and reduces university drop-out or student de-motivation for learning. It can also produce an instructional or pedagogical shift inside the universities eLearning moving the focus from the education materials and technology to the user- student, to user generated content.

Aims

Aims of the project:

  • To overview and implement emerging tools and technology commonly referred to as "social software" that can create personal as opposed to institutional learning environments, as well as the mobile learning tools
  • To support practitioners in becoming aware of the new features of the digital students, to learn to effectively use and develop resources with new digital technologies and new communication tools in ways that are aligned with what they want to achieve educationally.
